Some spit & polish for Calendar

It’s been a while since we launched our calendar app. Meanwhile we have been listening carefully to user feedback and also learning from our experiences. Acting on the same, we have made some changes to our current design.

No more flipping

Many of our users told us that they were completely missing out the flip icon, which was on the top right corner of the event card. Flipping the card revealed two important but not so crucial details of the event — Availability & Notify me. As our users were missing this out we decided to fix it in few different ways. We tried a different icon, making the present icon darker etc. but all our solutions were confined to only making the changes to the icon; so, we thought why not get rid of the icon completely and try to show these data upfront on the card. After a lot of moving around and shifting things we settled down on this.

The ‘On time’ dilemma

When we showed the notification info below the title, we faced a rather peculiar problem. When we showed On time it felt more like the event was on time rather than you’ll be notified on time. So, Instead of On time we thought, what if we show Event start. It seemed to be a great replacement. Turns out, it had its own issues. Because we support multiple languages, localisation came into play; usually translating a short english line makes it long and breaks the layout in some languages. We realized that we needed something else as a replacement. After everything we decided to show the starting time of the event. For example lets say the event is at 8pm, instead of the notification info saying On time it would show starting time of the event i.e. 8PM. Have a look at the screen shot below to have a clear understanding.

Location is now easy to perceive

We have dissected the location field into two — Place name/title & address. Previously we showed these together which wasn’t difficult to understand but was tough to perceive. Have a look at the screen shot below to have a clear understanding.

Okay, we need to talk

While all this was going on in the card we did bring in some major changes to the user flow!

Q: Wait a minute, what did you guys do now?

A: We kinda took out the save button 😬.

Q: What do you mean by took it out?! How am I suppose to save now? 😡

A: Well, as soon as you are done editing, just hit the back button and BAM! the event is saved. Magic, ain’t it 🙌

Q: Ummm okay, but… what if I made some changes by mistake and want to go back a step?

A: You mean undo? Well, we got you covered there bud. We do have a certain cancel button at places where we believe things can go wrong. (Don’t you know we are humans too 🎶)

Phew, thanks there fellas!

No Problem! BTW, We should be grateful to you guys for helping us make the product a bit better few codes at a time . Keep sending in your feedback. We’re all ears.

That’s all folks! Hope you like the update. Thanks for all the love.

Peace ✌️
